Fundraising Support

So, you've decided to fundraise for the Ignite Programme or the Centre for Cancer Immunology? That's great!
Check out this page for all our top tips on how to get started and how to make your fundraiser as successful as possible.

Fundraising Top Tips

Challenge yourself – If you are a person known to run 10ks, it’s unlikely that you’ll raise a lot of money by just running another 10k because people expect you to do this, but if you went out of your comfort zone and ran a marathon or half-marathon, you’ll likely get more donations.

Get creative – You can look at some stories for inspiration on our main page or download our fundraising handbook. Don’t be afraid to do something different as this will stand out to your donors/supporters and encourage them to spread the word about your fundraising.

Become your first supporter - Fundraising pages look more enticing when they already have a donation. Visitors to your page are more likely to give if they can see that others already have.

Spread the word about your fundraising - You can share your page on social media, add it to your email signature, and even get friends and family to spread the word. The more people that know about your fundraiser, the more donations you will get.

Educate yourself and your supporters on the cause – If others know about the problem that your cause is trying to fix, then they are more likely to give if they think it will help to fix that problem. Tell your story in your JustGiving pages or on social media. Do include any personal connection to the cause as people are likely to empathise with this.

Explain the impact that your gift will have – Ask ladders are amazing at showing the impact of a smaller donation, especially when you have a larger fundraising target. Do not be afraid of asking for specific ask amounts - People are more likely to give £20 if they know exactly what that £20 could be spent on.

Thank your supporters – Thanking people after they donate is a really good way to get them to stay in contact and keep them interested in your journey. JustGiving send an automatic thank-you message to anyone that donates, so we highly recommend you personalise this in your page settings. You can also go a step further and thank people who donate direct via social media, text, or even email – this might sound scary, but your donors will really appreciate it.

Update your supporters – Whether it be via social media or by using the update function on your JustGiving page, it is important to keep your supporters updated. You can update them when you reach a fundraising milestone, distance/time if you’re training for an event, or if you’re running your own event such as a bake sale or a raffle. Let your supporters follow your journey – you never know, they might become inspired enough to donate again.

Tell us how you did - We want to know about your fundraising so that we can celebrate your sucesses with you! Send us your photos and tell us about the journey you’ve been on, so that we can inspire others to follow in your footsteps. You can let us know how you did by emailling commfr@soton.ac.uk.
