Liza's Garden Party: How One Woman Raised £75,000 For Cancer Immunology
When five of her friends were diagnosed with cancer, the realities of this terrible disease hit home for Liza. She saw her friends battle the disease with courage, determination, and strength. Tragically, she saw some of her friends lose their battles.
Fortunately, one of Liza's friends has recovered thanks to an immunotherapy trial at Southampton, and has now been in remission for four years.
In Liza's own words, she said: "To see the treatment work is wonderful and offers so much hope. It shows us what can be achieved, but we need more research to tell us why immunotherapy only works in some cases. We need to develop these treatments even further to make sure that treatment works for everyone."
Liza felt the need to take action, so she decided to fundraise for the Centre for Cancer Immunology. To support the Centre, Liza arranged a garden party fundraiser - This event included an auction, a raffle, and a performance from a group of opera singers. This event had over 500 people attend and raised an astonishing £75,000 for the Centre - This helped to fund the UK's first PhD programme in cancer immunology.
Liza is extremely dedicated to fundraising for the Centre - She is a painter and has pledged to donate 20% of every sale to the Centre for Cancer Immunology. So far she has raised over £150,000 for the centre, and she hope to inspire other to fundraise for the centre and support cancer research.
