The Parkes Institute is the world’s oldest and leading centre for the study of Jewish/non-Jewish relations. We are a unique community of scholars, archivists, librarians and students and our scholarly expertise ranges from antiquity through to the present day. Our archive is one of the largest Jewish documentation centres in Europe.
The Institute is named after the Reverend Dr James Parkes (1896-1981), one of the most remarkable figures in twentieth century Christianity. Ordained by the Church of England in 1926, Parkes campaigned against the rise of racist nationalism in Europe through his work with the International Student Service and the Student Christian Movement from as early as the 1920s. A tireless fighter against antisemitism, Parkes helped rescue Jewish refugees during the 1930s and campaigned for European Jews during the Holocaust, working throughout his career to promote religious tolerance and mutual respect.
The Parkes Institute relies significantly on the support and generosity of our donors and gifts of all levels have a real impact, contributing to our success. Every gift made to the Parkes Institute helps us to develop our education and research in Jewish Studies at the University of Southampton, and to build the Parkes Library and Archive collections.
This is an important time for the advancement of our work, and we would be very grateful if you would consider making a gift to support our new Masters programme. Our MA Holocaust: History, Experience, Heritage will provide students with a foundation for postgraduate research in a variety of Holocaust Studies fields, whilst equipping them with the means to pursue careers in fields such as Holocaust education, outreach, heritage curation, public history and commemoration. Your support would be crucial in ensuring that we can offer bursaries and scholarships to enable students to be part of this MA, and to ensure the future of this critically important field of study.
Your gift could transform the experience of our students studying on the programme:
£3000 to enable 10 students to travel to Eastern Europe (£300 each)
£1000 to enable two trips per student to London (£100 each)
£9000 for mini bursaries for three UK students towards fees (£3000 each)
£14,000 for one bursary for a non-UK student towards fees
Did you know last year 25% of all donations to Southampton came from generous gifts in wills? If you would like more information about remembering the University in your will, please contact our Legacy Manager, Nicola Clark - n.clark@soton.ac.uk
